What Is Macular Degeneration?

Macular degeneration, also called AMD or age-related macular degeneration, occurs when the macula — the central portion of the retina — begins to wear down, causing central vision loss.

People who suffer from AMD tend to lose their “straight ahead” vision, making it difficult to read, drive, and recognize faces.

Total vision loss is unlikely, as there's typically enough peripheral vision to allow for other activities of daily life.

Types of Macular Degeneration:

macular degeneration types

  • Dry AMD: small deposits called drusen damage retinal nerve cells and reduce vision
  • Wet AMD: new blood vessels form that leak and release fluid that harms the macula. This is a more severe form of AMD that can more quickly cause vision loss.

Don’t Let AMD Rob You of Your Sight

An estimated 196 million people are living with macular degeneration worldwide. Although those affected by it rarely lose all their vision, the vast majority suffer from some degree of vision loss.

While there is currently no cure for AMD, there are certain treatments that can slow its progression — and low vision aids that can increase independent functioning.

If you think you're at risk or are experiencing symptoms, contact Roberts Eyecare Associates - Sidney today. We can diagnose and help treat the disease.

Risk Factors for AMD

  • Aged 50+

The onset of AMD usually happens over the age of 50 and increases substantially with time. For instance, a 2% risk at age 55 can turn into a 30% risk by age 75.

  • Lifestyle factors

Smoking or eating a diet high in saturated fat can increase your risk of AMD. Furthermore, these habits increase the risk of high blood pressure and cardiovascular disease–two additional risk factors for AMD.

  • Obesity

Research shows that people with a BMI of over 30 double their chances of developing AMD.

  • Family History

If you have a close relative with AMD, you have a higher risk of developing this eye condition.

How to Stop the Progression of Macular Degeneration

While there isn’t yet a cure for AMD or an effective way of reversing vision loss that has already occurred, you can take certain steps and adopt new habits to slow the progression of the disease.

Furthermore, certain treatments can slow its progression and low vision aids that can increase independent functioning.

Talk to us about how you can slow the progression of the disease and avoid vision loss by contacting Roberts Eyecare Associates - Sidney today.

When something is wrong with your eyes it can be a scary time, I don’t think anyone on earth can d... isagree with that. I seem to have more eye problems than anyone in the Southern Tier, and thank goodness for the team and Roberts Eyecare in SIDNEY! After my golf trip in Gettysburg I thought I had something in my eye, a coworker noticed my eye looked awful 3 days later and I quickly called up the team at Robert’s in Sidney. The team there promptly answered the phone as they always do, and in less than a minute they were able to squeeze me in for an emergency appointment. The doctor proceeded to pull out “the biggest thing he’s ever pulled out of an eye”, a seed pod stuck under the membrane of the eye. He said if I didn’t get there that day I would have lost my eye (just joking about that part). Sidney is a small town, I would say Robert’s Eyecare in Sidney is a top 1 or 2 business in town, I only hope someday for our children and our children’s children that the Vestal location can learn a thing or two from the FIVE STAR TEAM in Sidney!

Glad my daughter told me to go to Sidney instead of other location (which I had appointment at other... location). Took me right in for testing and no wait for Doctor to come in for examination. I had the pleasure of meeting Mary who was so helpful in helping me find the right glasses for me. She went above and beyond in every step explaining different things. The glasses came in sooner and I picked up and again I had the help of Mary. She should be commended on her outstanding Customer Service. Thanks again Mary and Roberts Eyecare of Sidney NY.

We have been using this Robert eye care for over 4 years. Everyone on staff is friendly, understandi... ng, and take the time to explain what they see. They do not over charge or force you to spend when not needed. They work well with your insurance and explain what the insurance will and will not cover. I highly recommend Roberts Eye care in Sidney NY.

Very professional staff here! They all had pleasant attitudes & exceptional customer service skills.... . They will definitely take good care of you. I came in for an appt with my 2 small children (both under 3) and the girls up front went above and beyond to help in whatever way they could so everything ran smoothly. The doctor was very pleasant to speak with and I left my appt more educated about my vision. I definitely recommend!

PROFESSIONAL ON A PERSONAL LEVEL. Thanks again to everyone. The combination of my experiences with a... ll of you would have to be chalked up to being friendly, professional, patient, knowledgeable, courteous, and personable staff. Won't have to go there too many times before I consider you all friends instead of simply healthcare providers.

The best eyecare facility I’ve ever been to. All of the staff and nurses are so kind and they will... always take me right away and tell me to come in with no wait or hesitation if anything gets worse. Dr. Belanger is the kindest doctor I’ve ever met, he genuinely cares about his patients, and knows exactly what he’s doing. 10 out of 10 would recommend!

The best eye glass place I have ever been to. I would highly recommend to everyone. Took the time to... do a really extension exam. Way better than any other place I have been to. Also accepted my insurance. Doctor introduced himself by his first name and had an awesome handshake. I knew right away that I was going to like this place. Also eye glasses can be made right there. This place is a good choice for all.

My daughter is 4 and was referred by her school for a eye exam. All the staff were very patient with... her while waiting for her turn and great with having the paper work ready and made it simple for first timers. Then the women who did her first eye test was great and made it fun and exciting for her! The dr was amazing and very very kid friendly! He had to put drops in her eyes and distracted her while putting them in and kept her smiling then they put on cartoons for us while we waited for the drops to dilate her eyes! He also explained everything to me in simple terms and took time to answer all of my questions and concerns. Also the man who helps picks out glasses with you made her feel super special with explaining how they make lenses for the glasses you pick out just for you and that they wouldn’t work for anyone but her! She had a great first time experience and it means a lot sense we will be visiting there often because sadly her eye sight isn’t good but hopefully it will get better with the glasses and this team of amazing people to help!

Macular Degeneration FAQs

What are the first signs of AMD?

You may have AMD and not know it. Typically, symptoms may not develop until the advanced stage of the eye disease.

First signs of AMD may include:

  • Blurred vision
  • Blind spots or dark spots
  • Straight lines appearing distorted or wavy
  • Faded colors

For early detection and better outcomes, it's important to undergo regular eye exams at our eye clinic, especially if you have a family history of AMD or other risk factors.

How common is macular degeneration?

Statistics indicate that 8.7% of the world population has macular degeneration. The rate of AMD is expected to increase from 196 million in 2022 to 288 million by 2040.

What is the best treatment for macular degeneration?

Currently, the most common treatment for wet AMD is the injection of medications called anti-VEGF agents. High levels of VEGF in the eye increase the formation of abnormal blood vessels that cause much of the damage in wet AMD.
